ACS 1130 - Introduction to Actuarial Science2 lecture hours 0 lab hours 2 credits
Course Description
This course is an introduction to the Actuarial Science profession. The course topics include various facets of the actuarial profession, actuarial terminology, as well as fundamental concepts of sets and combinatorics. Actuaries from different companies in the area make presentations to class. In addition, students may shadow actuaries at different cooperating companies to observe a typical day of an actuary. (prereq: Actuarial Science major or Actuarial Science program director consent)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Articulate the missions and functions of the two major actuarial societies, Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society
- Differentiate between casualty actuaries, health insurance actuaries, pension actuaries and life insurance actuaries
- Explain the importance of the professional exams in finding jobs as an actuary in the insurance industry and finding internships
- Define the timeline for preparing for and taking the actuarial exams
- Write a proper and effective actuarial resume for actuarial internships and job applications
- Practice effective interview skills
- Demonstrate combination, permutation, and other fundamental counting techniques
- Identify general properties of sets
