CAE 3511 - Analysis of Structures

2 lecture hours 2 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
This course presents methods of structural analysis for determinate and indeterminate structures. Topics include truss and beam analysis, virtual work method for deflections, flexibility methods, stiffness methods, and computerized structural analysis. (prereq: CAE 3501 ) (quarter system prereq: AE 3201)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Analyze statically determinate structures with complex loadings and geometry
  • Analyze statically indeterminate structures using classical methods
  • Distinguish the needed level of accuracy in an engineering model
  • Generate accurate solutions for reactions, member internal forces and deflections for trusses, beams, and frames
  • Compare and contrast results from computer software and hand calculations

Prerequisites by Topic
  • Static analysis of beams, frames, and trusses
  • Stress and strain analysis of structural members under combined loadings
  • Deformation and displacement of statically determinate systems
  • Structural loadings and load paths

Course Topics
  • Determinacy and stability of structures
  • Forces in statically determinate trusses, beams, and frames
  • Displacements of determinate structures by the virtual work method
  • Analysis of statically indeterminate structures by the force method
  • Moment distribution for beams and non-sway frames
  • Influence lines, pattern loading and moving loads
  • Approximate analysis of statically indeterminate structures
  • Use of structural analysis software
