BME 1010 - Introduction to Biomedical Engineering

1 lecture hours 2 lab hours 2 credits
Course Description
This course introduces students to the biomedical engineering (BME) profession. Students are introduced to different subdisciplines and career options in BME. The BME curriculum is discussed, along with strategies for choosing among different curricular and co-curricular options to best be prepared for the different career options. Students are also introduced to the medical device design process and engage in a group project to design and fabricate a medical device component based on realistic specifications. This course meets the following Raider Core CLO requirement: Integrate Learning. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Name the characteristics of a medical device
  • Identify the requirements and different options for completing the biomedical engineering curriculum
  • Identify medical devices associated with the major sub-areas of biomedical engineering
  • Identify career options for biomedical engineers and how choices made as a biomedical engineering student may influence one’s options upon graduation
  • Identify different types of engineering considerations that go into the design of common biomedical devices
  • Explain the importance of regulation of the medical device industry
  • Explain the importance of human factors and safety considerations in medical device design
