ELE 3300 - Signals and Systems3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description This course emphasizes the fundamental concepts underlying information-bearing signals and the systems that process those signals. Signals and systems will be modeled using common mathematical functions. System outputs will be determined using time- and frequency-domain techniques. Fourier techniques will be utilized for the analysis and synthesis of signals. Examples of multistage systems such as communication and sampling systems will be introduced and examined. MATLAB will be used for modeling and simulating signals and systems. (prereq: ELE 2011 , MTH 2140 ) (quarter system prereq: EE 2070 or EE 3002B or EE 2725, MA 235 or MA 3502) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Relate the mathematical expressions and transformations of signals to waveform plots
- Interpret and apply the definitions of periodicity, symmetry, and energy/power as continuous-time signal properties
- Interpret and apply the definitions of linearity, time-invariance, causality, and BIBO stability as continuous-time system properties
- Determine the outputs of linear, time-invariant systems using time- and frequency-domain techniques
- Plot and interpret signal spectra and system frequency responses.
