BIO 2320 - Cellular Microbiology

2 lecture hours 2 lab hours 3 credits
Course Description
This course introduces students to the basics of cellular microbiology and the increasing importance and applications of microorganisms in engineering. The principles of microbiology are discussed along with their impact on medicine, agriculture, and the environment.  Diversity of the microbial world, controls of microbial growth and metabolism, microbial molecular biology, microbe-human interaction, medical microbiology, food microbiology, water and sewage treatment, environmental microbiology, bioremediation and related published work are discussed. Lab activities provide hands on experience to emphasize lecture content. (prereq: BIO 1110 ) (quarter system prereq: BI 102)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe historical aspects of microorganisms’ impacts on human societies
  • Identify the structural and function differences among microorganisms
  • Compare the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
  • Describe the fundamentals of microbial reproduction, growth, and control
  • Explain the underlying principles of the methods used to control microbial growth
  • Compare and contrast microbial interactions with hosts in health and disease
  • Examine the applications of microbes to water safety and food production
  • Describe the importance of bioremediation
  • Demonstrate the use of basic microbiology engineering terminology and techniques
  • Describe contemporary technological, social, ethical, and economic issues of microbiology in today’s world
  • Design and perform a scientific experiment including hypothesis generation and testing
  • Identify potential experimental procedural errors
  • Explain the use of statistical tests to interpret laboratory data
  • Write scientific reports in standardized format
