Course Description
Online Academic Reading I is the first in a four-course sequence that develops needed academic skills in the areas of reading comprehension, critical thinking, and vocabulary acquisition. Students will build and employ strategies to aid their reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities, as well as improve their reading speed. They will further develop their academic vocabulary within the context of content-based ESL instruction. A “Practical English” section will help students grow their knowledge of every day English vocabulary. Students will participate in online group discussions about 21st century topics such as E-commerce, work and lifestyles, and health care. Three module assignments will also be assigned, through which students will further gain exposure to vocabulary and grammar in an authentic context, as well as utilize the reading skills discussed in the course. - Make predictions about a reading
- Locate and evaluate topic sentences in text
- Improve reading speed by employing the reading strategies of skimming and scanning
- Identify main ideas and details in a text
- Take notes using different types of graphic organizers
- Recognize the parts of a good summary
- Synthesize ideas from a reading
- Recognize the structure of a reading
- Determine literal meanings and inferences from a text
Vocabulary Development
- Preview vocabulary words to aid comprehension
- Deduce meanings of new words through context and punctuation
- Use knowledge of stems and affixes, parts of speech, synonyms and antonyms, and word families to determine the definition of a new word
