CH 3670 - Polymer Chemistry3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits Course Description The course will cover basics of polymer nomenclature, synthesis, characterization, and properties. Biopolymers and bio-plastics will be introduced. Examples of major applications of polymeric materials will also be presented. (prereq: CH 200 or CH 200A or CH 200B or equivalent.) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify structures of polymers
- Understand the mechanisms of step-growth and chain-growth polymerization and biopolymer processing
- Apply methods for polymers characterization, and analyze characterization data
- Discuss the concepts ‘biodegradability’ and ‘biocompatibility’
- Discuss industrial applications of polymers in general, and design polymers for industrial application
