MI 16010 - Workflow Analysis and Redesign

Course Description
In this course, students will explore techniques for assessing complex clinical and administrative workflows within the health care environment. Systems thinking, human-computer interaction, and models of human decision making will be discussed. Using these concepts and assessment outcomes, students will develop and implement improvements to workflows, data flows, and systems. (prereq: none)
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Recommend a strategy for obtaining and managing stakeholder requirements for workflows and systems
  • Using methods of workflow analysis, assess clinical and administrative information needs within a given workflow and identify areas of potential improvement
  • Using user-centered design principles, develop and implement changes to workflows, data flows, and systems based on assessment outcomes
  • Develop a strategy for assessing changes to determine if the intended improvement has occurred
