MI 15010 - Health Care Environment

Course Description
In this course, students will investigate diverse data management models used in health care delivery for individual patients and communities to understand the data needs and challenges experienced by patients, providers, and administrators.  In addition, the forces affecting the health care system, such as changes to clinical practice, reimbursement models, and legal and regulatory environments will be analyzed.  Finally the course will discuss health care data management outside of the United States for a global perspective on health care data. (prereq: None) 
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Identify data models involved in health care delivery environments such as ambulatory, inpatient, emergency, intensive/critical, home, community, and long-term care environments.
  • Summarize the flow of data, information, and knowledge throughout a health system and across the continuum of patient and community care.
  • Compare and contrast the information and data needed in admission and registration, care delivery, charging and billing, public health, and quality and patient safety improvement.
  • Summarize the use and impact of terminologies, vocabularies, and classification systems use in health care, such as ICD-10 and SNOMED.
  • Analyze the impact of legal requirements on the health care environment, such as HIPAA, HITECH, and ACA.
  • Compare and contrast the challenges in health care data management and delivery in the United States with those in other countries.
