ME 861 - Finite Element Analysis for Mechanical Engineering

3 lecture hours 0 lab hours 3 credits
Application of the finite element method in the areas of stress analysis, heat transfer and fluid flow is covered in this course. Theoretical background is presented, and the interpretation of the results of the analysis as applied to the design process is stressed. Stress analysis includes 2-D and 3-D applications, contact problems and nonlinear analysis. Heat transfer analysis includes steady-state and transient, conduction and convection analysis in two and three dimensions. Fluid flow analysis also includes steady-state and transient, laminar and turbulent flow in two and three dimensions. This course stresses FEA as a design tool rather than the development of finite element theory. A commercial FEA program is used to perform the analysis, and illustrate and interpret the output. (prereq: ME-460 or equivalent)
