MI 17010 - Evidence-based Medicine and Decision Support

2 lecture hours 4 lab hours 4 credits
Course Description
In this course, students will explore the development of clinical guidelines from evidence and the implementation of this evidence at the point of care. This course highlights both clinical and operational decision support, including disease management systems, diagnostic decision support, criteria sets, automated EHR documentation, and consumer informatics. Students will also investigate the role of genetics and genomics on further personalization of medicine. (prereq: MI 15010 MI 15020 MI 16010 MI 16030 )
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Synthesize the motivations for using evidence-based medicine and decision support within a health care environment
  • Assess the sources of clinical evidence and summarize their uses in supporting clinical practice
  • Within a care delivery workflow, compare and contrast approaches to providing evidence-based tools at the point of care
  • Evaluate resistance to decision support tools within administrative and care environments and recommend strategies for change management
  • Evaluate ethical, legal, and social considerations when implementing decision support tools

Prerequisites by Topic
  • To understand the impact of medical evidence and decision support with the clinical and administrative processes within healthcare, students need an understanding of the health care environment in which they work as well as informatics concepts (such as standardized documentation). In addition, they need to understand the workflow impact of introducing technology and the need to appropriately manage and integrate data. As a result, this entire course relies on knowledge obtained in the MI 15010 , MI 15020 , MI 16010 , and MI 16030  courses
