MI 16040 - System Lifecycle

2 lecture hours 4 lab hours 4 credits
Course Description
In this course, students will explore the health care information system lifecycle from initial proposal through eventual sunsetting of systems. Students will learn the concepts, tools, and techniques currently used in the selection and implementation of health care information systems. In addition, this course will cover maintenance and support planning, to ensure that implemented solutions are effectively managed throughout their lifecycle. (prereq: MI 16010 MI 16020 MI 16030 )
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Synthesize system requirements based on fact-finding activities, workflow analysis, and use cases
  • Apply the software vendor selection process by creating a request for information (RFI)/request for proposal (RFP) and defining vendor selection criteria
  • Examine key contractual components related to software licensing, professional service, and support agreements
  • Develop an implementation plan addressing both technical and operational readiness
  • Propose a system support and maintenance strategy based on the needs of the organization
