NU 6340 - Ethics in Nursing and Health Care2 lecture hours 0 lab hours 2 credits Course Description This course is designed to provide the opportunity to explore ethical theories, frameworks and principles. Emphasis will be placed on challenging the student to explore personal values and beliefs related to ethical decision making and apply ethical principles in clinical practice and health care situations. In addition, students will use the knowledge and skills to address ethical dilemmas in complex health care systems. (prereq: none) Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically examine key ethical theories and apply the core ethical theories and principles as they pertain to health care delivery
- Compare key assumptions, and engage in reflective thinking about key ethical theories
- Critically examine the qualities of ethical nursing practice discussed in the American Nurse Association (ANA) and International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of Ethics
- Integrate concepts of moral courage and moral integrity into personal practice
- Apply ethical principles and systematic, sound reasoning to address ethical dilemmas in advanced nursing practice, complex health care environments, and varied populations across the lifespan
- Select and synthesize the application of an ethical framework to solve an ethical problem
- Discuss ethical principles and consider as they apply to organizational levels
- Compare and contrast the attributes of organizations that maintain high ethical standards
- Apply ethical based reasoning when engaging ethical based problem solving
- Evaluate legal and ethical issues related to client data, confidentiality and information and technology in the organizational setting
